Campus Life Grills Up Some Fun in the Sun!

August 24th — as a part of Laker Week, students and faculty took to Brimley State Park to have some Fun in the Sun. The last day before classes may have been overcast, but the brief moments of sunshine and the disposition of the attendees kept the mood light. WLSO and Campus Life provided music, hot dogs, and corn on the cob. LSSU president Dr. Thomas Pleger was in attendance, further proving his commitment to engaging with the student body. Knowing this may be their last chance to relax before the stress of term, students busied themselves with surprisingly warm beach and volleyball.

In a departure from the last four years, Fun in the Sun was not held at Sherman Park, but instead at Brimley State Park. Despite the shuttles taking the participants to the location, the distance and the eleven dollar entrance fee (for a recreation passport) may have played a part in the event drawing a smaller crowd than last year’s Fun in the Sun. Those who could make it were treated to food from the grill, served up by Dr. Pleger, his wife Teresa, Scott Korb, and Ken Peress. Corn on the cob was a welcome alternative to the traditional chips that so often accompany hot dogs.

Dr. Pleger was there to mingle with the students, sharing information and asking a bit about some of the professors. Aiding with food preparation at this relatively innocuous event lends credence to his desire to get to know the student body. His continued participation in the life of Lake Superior State University shows true interest in getting the students and faculty to work together in the coming years.

The relaxed nature of this year’s Fun in the Sun gave opportunity to get in a last bit of summer fun. Even with the loom of classes and the hectic pace they bring, this event was enough to soothe the minds of the students, if only for a few hours.
